my beloved country has just celebrated its 50th anniversary of independence and boy what a lavish celebration it was. Over 100 million ringgit was spent for the celebration lasting over the course of one month. What do we have to celebrate as peace loving malaysians? we are apparently living in a multicultralal nation where all the different races live in harmony. But is that true If we were to look under the seemingly coexistence of the races we see that the races actually do not see eye 2 eye on many issues, our school system is as segregated as ever the national type schools are dominated by one race and the students dont easily mix with their classmates of other races. When my son came home after school one day he asked me papa why did my malay friend say he cannot be my friend and seemed quite upset by it as we have always taught him to be friends with all his classmates irrespective of race or religion.
Is thi9s what we are teaching our children now to only select friends who share the same colour as us? Then i say we have not progressed in fact we have regressed. I still remember my school days when i had malay ,chinese kadazan pakistani and sikhs as my friends we didnt seem to mind that our colour was different or that we were of different religions all that mattered to us was how we could help each other or in whose house we were going to lepak. What has happened to that bonhommie? I crave sometimes for the old days when maybe we didnt have much but we were rich in terms of friends. Where has that all gone.
And so I ask where is this belaved country of mine headed ? I would like to think that all right thinking malaysians will ponder on thisesp. as our next general electionsdraws near
